Embroidered Scout Patches For All Activities & Events
Boy and Girl Scout programs have many patches that are standard across the board and correspond to specific activities in the official scouting books for the different levels. Council, troop, pack, and den emblems are usually provided by the local troop as part of the dues or sign up costs. The individual badges earned by the scout are not normally on hand since the kids pick and choose which activities and challenges they wish to complete, independent of others. Some challenges are taken on as a group and the den leader or pack leader orders the specific embroidered scout patches, but these a usually stock patches because ordering a few custom patches is far too expensive.
Many companies have stock patches for camping, skills, fun and games, outdoor, service, sports, education, nature and ecology. As a den or pack leader you may want to select a stock patch in a quantity sufficient to cover every member, then have them on hand to award to the scout at the special event or as a task is completed. Many companies have a good selection of scout patches, but may also only have a few of any particular activity.
There are many new activities or special occasions a scouting organization may want to commemorate with a unique custom designed patch. Some embroidered scout patches are premade for specific nationwide events and only require the addition of the council or troop name in a space left open for such. Each group must order their own depending on the number of members and leaders in the group. When designing a custom patch, consider the amount of space it will take up on the sash or vest of the scout. The kids all want to be the one with the most patches and will turn into badge hounds so be prepared to order on a regular basis.
Recognizing scouts for individual achievements is one of the best ways for them to develop self-esteem. Encourage your troop or council to have the kids design a special patch for a special occasion then have the whole judge them and select a winner. Do not forget the invaluable leaders and assistants who deserve recognition, too. Without them, there would be no scouting programs.

How can I find out how much to list boy scout patches?
for when I’m selling them on E-Bay? Does anyone know any good reference sites that I don’t have to pay for? I NEED the money and some of the patches are unusual.

I’ve found that the completed listings on eBay are the best place to find current value of memorabilia.
To get the best price, describe the item as best you can. You are allowed up to 12 pictures of the item. Get as detailed and clear an image as possible and post lots of pictures, including the back of the patch. If you get questions about the item during the auction, post your answer so that other bidders can see the question/answer. If they know that others are interested, they may increase their offer. Calculate your eBay and PayPal fees and include this cost on the opening bid price. Try to keep the opening bid as low as possible and only charge the true cost of postage. True collectors will be watching, and waiting for the closing 10 minutes to bid.

“Badges” is the generic term often used for all earned age-level insignia, though officially, only Girl Scout Juniors earn Badges (Daisies earn Petals, Brownies earn Try-Its, and Cadettes/Seniors/Ambassadors earn Interest Project Awards). They generally have a set number of requirements to earn them, and if you look over the GS materials, you’ll find they follow similar patterns – trying an activity, learning about careers in it, learning about technology used for it, teaching others about it, etc. Some GS Councils develop “Council’s Own” age-level insignia for something unique to their region – like a lighthouse one from one of the NJ Councils (or if there’s just an area they feel is missing from the national program – like a scrapbooking one).
Patches can be received for fun events (“Pizza night” “Troop camp) or are earned through certain programs (my daughter has one for visiting Colonial Williamsburg, for example, which required she do certain activities and answer questions to earn). So, it can be a little confusing since some are earned – but the big difference is they’re not developed by GSUSA (the national organization) or by a local Council as a Council’s Own Age-Level Insignia item.
Patches are only worn on the back of the uniform, or they can be put on a camp blanket, jacket, wall hanging, whatever the girl chooses.

Is there a certain way to sew on Girl Scout Patches?
Can you just sew it by hand or can you do it by machine? and if by machine, are there certain you need to make sure you do?
“Patches” go on the back of your vest or sash, if you are a Daisy, Brownie, or Junior. For D/B/J if you earn a “petal/try-it/badge” you put that on the front. “Interest Project Patches”, earned by Cadette and Seniors go on the front of your vest or sash. Now if you are talking about how they adhere to the fabric, I usually use “silver thread” (staple) to hold it in place while I run a basting stitch on the sewing machine around the parameter of the “badge/patch/petal/try-it”. I try to match the thread as closely as possible. Look on eBay for similar patches to get a rough estimate of value. Be sure to identify the badges accurately, as price depends on age, number produced, and demand.
